Mission

  • To facilitate the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in animal science for the benefit of society.

Objectives

  • Provide opportunities for members to exchange ideas about research, teaching, and extension in animal science.
  • Promote public policy related to animal science and the industry.
  • Provide information on scientific issues and public policy related to the animal industries.

History

  • The Canadian Society of Animal Science originated from Eastern and Western sections formed over 70 years ago. The Western Canadian Society of Animal Production was organized in 1925 with Professor Sackville from the University of Alberta as its first president. The following year saw the formation of the Eastern Society of Animal Production with Professor Toole from the Ontario Agricultural College as its first president.
  • A national executive was established in 1951, and in 1971, the name of the Society was changed to the Canadian Society of Animal Science. The Society was incorporated in 1985. In 1996, CSAS became a founding Associate Member of the Agricultural Institute of Canada (AIC). Further details on the Society are contained in the Official History of the Society 1925 -1980, prepared by K. Rasmussen and published by the CSAS, and on the CSAS web page.
