Canada Research Chair in Epigenomics / Nutrigenomics

UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA invites applicants with internationally recognized academic and leadership skills in the area of epigenomics / nutrigenomics to apply for nomination to a Canada Research Chair (Tier I). This new and exciting position in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science offers an exceptional opportunity for a successful candidate to play a leadership role in a dynamic research and teaching department. The focus of the position is on understanding how epigenetic mechanisms of gene regulation in animals/humans are influenced by environmental factors, especially nutrition, and how such mechanisms determine postnatal outcomes in terms of postnatal growth, health and disease.

The successful candidate will work at the interfaces of molecular genetics, nutrition, and developmental biology. The candidate will have opportunities to align his/her research portfolio with the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences, Alberta and the Alberta Institute for Human Nutrition. The selected candidate will have the vision and talent essential to building successful collaborative trans-disciplinary research programs that cross institutional boundaries spanning Agriculture, Nutrition, Developmental Biology and Medicine. This dynamic individual must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, high energy and a personal commitment to the development of an integrated research program in epigenomics / nutrigenomics. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will provide leadership in this research area that will bridge the strong human/animal nutrition and livestock genomics research groups already established in the department. The Chair will also contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching.

Applicants must have a PhD in animal molecular genetics, nutritional biochemistry, developmental biology, or a closely related area, and outstanding research credentials in areas such as chromatin modification, gene imprinting, nutrient-gene interactions, and epigenetic gene regulation as demonstrated by publications and awards. Exceptional candidates with a proven research track record in gene regulation as it relates to animal/human development and health are encouraged to apply. This is a tenure track appointment at an Associate/Full Professor level.

Master of Science Position Available-Mucosal Innate Immunity

Graduate research opportunity (MSc) is available in the area of nutritional immunology focusing on immunomodulation of the avian mucosal immune system. The candidate will evaluate different bioactive nutrients from dietary components associated with modulation of mucosal immune response. The research includes development of methods to elucidate intestinal pathogen control mechanisms as determinants of innate immunity. Masters of Science Position Available - Genetic Diversity in Farm Animal Breeds

The Canadian Animal Genetic Resource (CAGR) program (Agriculture and AgriFood Canada, Saskatoon Research Centre) has a post-graduate student position leading to the Masters of Science degree currently available (September 2007) to study temporal changes in genetic diversity in livestock breeds registered in Canada (most likely beef cattle or horses). Planned studies will use a combination of pedigree records to describe inbreeding trends and large databases of historical multiloci genotypes to estimate effective population sizes and relative changes in genetic diversity over time. The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in agriculture or biological sciences as well as a strong interest in population and conservation genetics. As the research is computer-based analyses of previously collected data, strong computer skills are expected. The successful candidate will be paid a stipend of $17,000 (plus health benefits) and will be registered as a post-graduate student in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Saskatchewan. Degree and area of specialization: Ph.D. in Animal or Dairy Science with expertise in dairy management or a DVM with specialization in dairy production, herd health, or epidemiology. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Business, or a related field with expertise in dairy management are also encouraged to apply.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: The successful candidate is expected to provide leadership regarding efficient and cost-effective strategies for dairy management. The development of applied research and extension programs that result in decision-making tools for dairy producers and their advisors will be a high priority for this position. Potential areas of research include, (but are not limited to) modeling of dairy management systems and integration of knowledge and new technologies from various disciplines for greater profitability of milk production. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an extramurally-funded research program involving the training of graduate students.

Principal duties:The Department of Dairy Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking qualified candidates for a tenure track position in dairy management. This is a 12-month faculty appointment with both Extension (70%) and Research (30%) responsibilities at the assistant or associate professor level. The department is committed to developing a vibrant extension and research program in dairy management. POST DOCTORAL FELLOW (Feed Science and Ruminant Nutrition) Department of Animal and Poultry Science

The Department of Animal and Poultry Science, University of Saskatchewan, is seeking applicants for a post doctoral fellow position in Feed Science and Ruminant Nutrition.

The primary research responsibility will be related to feed research and development, and research projects related to feed processing and treatments; modeling nutrient supply, degraded protein balance, metabolizable protein, and microbial protein synthesis of conventional and non-conversional feeds; manipulation of digestive behaviors of feeds in cattle; and feed inherent structure and biological component matrix in relation to feed quality and nutrient utilization.

The successful candidate also will have an opportunity to be involved in other research activities related to feed and nutrition in the Department.

Duties: Oversee, conduct and publish research related to the defined research areas; assist in the coordination and daily operation of a relatively large research program, including the research activities of graduate (both M.S. and Ph.D.) and undergraduate students, technicians and collaborators; be involved in various grant-related activities, including the preparation of grant proposals; and preparation of manuscripts for publication, and industry newsletters and fact sheets related to the feed and nutrition research.

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in ruminant nutrition, feed science or a closely related field; demonstrated expertise in animal research, data analysis, and techniques in ruminant nutrition and feed science research; expertise in data interpretation and publication of results in the scientific literature; and strong written and oral communication skills.

Preferred qualifications: Experience with grantsmanship, teaching and supervising undergraduate and graduate students, and a demonstrated ability to work with other investigators, support personnel, and students in a collaborative research environment. Conditions: The position is for 1 year, renewal dependent upon funding and progress. Tentative start date is July 2007. Chair, Department of Animal Science

McGill University's Department of Animal Science invites applications from a senior scholar to chair the department, beginning September 2008. Job Opportunity - Alberta Agriculture and Food

Position: HACCP coordinator

The Poultry Research Centre (PRC) is expanding to include excellent research in value added poultry products. The PRC is supported by the University of Alberta, Alberta Agriculture and Food, the Alberta Livestock Industry Development Fund, the Alberta Agriculture Research Institute, poultry producers, and poultry and egg processors.

We are seeking a HACCP coordinator to support our research operations. This position is funded by the Food Safety Initiative until March 31, 2008, after which there is a possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitoring, evaluation and improvement of existing HACCP system
  • Ensure compliance of HACCP system with regulatory requirement
  • Developing new science based HACCP protocols to accommodate new operations
  • Collaborate with government and industry HACCP experts to maximize the effectiveness of HACCP protocols
  • Identify research opportunities to verify efficacy of HACCP protocols
  • Coordinate preparation of meat processing facilities for poultry processing, related to research protocols, including supervision of staff, students and technicians.
  • Training of students, staff and faculty to ensure HACCP compliance
  • Development of HACCP training materials, including a site-specific training video for the PRC
  • Document and report on progress related to HACCP implementation at the PRC. Preferred hiring criteria:
