Message from the President

Johanne Chiquette

Hi everyone!

It is an honour for me to be the incoming President of the Canadian Society of Animal Science for 2008-2009. Let me introduce our new Executive for 2008-2009:

  • Robert Berthiaume: Vice-President/Website Coordinator
  • Marie-France Palin: Secretary/Treasurer
  • Luigi Faucitano: Eastern Director/Awards Committee Chair
  • Ira Mandell: Eastern Director/Membership Committee Assistant
  • Ermias Kebreab: Western Director/Membership Committee Chair
  • Marina Von Keyserlingk: Western Director/Awards Committee Assistant
  • Bart Lardner: Director-at-Large/Industry Representative
  • Neil Ferguson: Director-At-Large/Industry Representative
  • Chantal Farmer: Journal Editor

I will try to keep you up to date with developments concerning the Society. Let me first tell you that our last Annual Conference in Guelph was a success and I would like to thank the organizing Committee (Stephen Miller, Steven Leeson, Kees De Lange, Vern Osborne and Gail Costigan) for their effort and dedication in putting all things together on time.

The following members were honoured at the Banquet:

  • Dr. James France: Fellowship Award (Alltech Canada)
  • Dr. Tim McAllister: Award for Excellence in Nutrition and Meat Sciences (Shur-Gain)
  • Dr. Candido Pomar: Award for Technical Innovation in Enhancing Production of Safe and Affordable Food (Elanco-Animal Health)
  • Dr. John Popp: Animal Industries Award for Excellence in Extension and Public Service (ruminants) (Dairy Farmers of Canada and Canadian Cattlemen's Association)
  • Dr. Oba Masahito: Young Scientist Award (Pfizer Animal Health)

Grad Student oral competition (Pfizer Animal Health): 1st: W. Xu, AAFC Lethbridge; 2nd: K.M. Wood, University of Guelph; 3rd: S.E. Hook, University of Guelph.

Grad Student poster competition (CSAS):1st: S.D. Pant, University of Guelph; 2nd: Y.J. Wang, University of Guelph; 3rd: R.M. Currie, Nova Scotia Agricultural College.

Finally I would like to thank the great work of our outgoing Executive members: Mike Dugan, Kees Plaizier, Martin Nyachoti, Chaouki Benchaar, and Brian Doig. It was a pleasure to get to know you through our work in the Society!

Please, mark your agenda for the next CSAS Meeting that will be held in Montreal, July 12 to 16, jointly with ASAS and ADSA.
